CHAMOIS FAUNA CENTER

The fauna area is part of the LIFE Project, aimed at the reintroduction of the apennine chamois in the National Park of the Monti Sibillini.

The 3 ha area faces Monte Sasso Tetto (1624 m) on the south side in the medium-high elevation of the Valley of Piastrone, just above the village of Bolognola. It is in this wooded and rocky landscape that the apennine chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica ornata – a subspecies of the genus Rupicapra) lives in a state of “semi-wilderness”. Here the chamois can keep its habits and behaviours - including feeding and reproduction - as close as possible to those in the wild. The two animals that are currently present in the area, originally from the National Park of Maiella, were released in June 2006.

Goals of the fauna area:

1. a program of births in the “semi-wilderness”
2. to have a pool of animals available for release after genetic screenings;
3. the development of scientific research aimed at providing useful information on the preservation of the species.
4. didactic and tourist activities

The chamois fauna area is a place for tourists and nature-lovers to learn and observe, with the help of qualified guides, the many different signs that indicate the age, gender and habits of these fascinating animals.

The project

The project (italian language), sponsored by Life-natura, has the principal goal of guaranteeing the preservation and development of new apennine chamois groups on the massifs of the Maiella and Gran Sasso over a long period, increasing genetic variability and maintaining a consistent number, and to reduce the risks tied to direct and indirect interactions with domesticated animals and human activity. Additionally, the project aims to increase the territorial area of the species in the National Park of the Monti Sibillini by creating a new family group, so as to improve the efficacy of the preservation measures that have already taken place.
