The magic of great silences

Starting from Castelluccio, one of the highest towns of the Apennines, the route is immersed in the outstanding scenery of the large karst basin wherein lies the Piano Grande, the Pian Piccolo and Piano Perduto, located at approximately 1300 meters altitude. These plains are enclosed by a frame of mountains forming a rugged relief, rising from the Piano Grande to the imposing "Coste del Vettore " in a single leap, and then beyond to the crest of M. Redentore (2449 m.). Fields of lentils around the village of Castelluccio create a spectacular floral display in the spring with wild mustard, poppies, cornflowers and ox-eyed daisies. From M. Capelletto towards the Valle della Dogana, which leads to the north on the Pian Piccolo, the trail goes near a pond where there is vegetation typical of peaty environments. On the right, facing northwest is M. Macchialta (1751 m.) where there is a wooded area called the Macchia Cavaliera. This is a particularly old beech wood, providing refuge to several species of animals including the wolf.
