Following the wolf’s path

Visso (607 m), represents a pure architectural gem nestled among the wooded foothills descending from M. Fema (1575 m.) located near the main ridge of the Monti Sibillini and of M. Cardosa (1818 m.). Here five valleys join and each is crossed by many rivers and streams including the Nera, the main tributary of the Tiber. The town, whose origin is unknown, has a historical heritage of great interest and often offers a picturesque medieval flavour. Climbing from the Borgo S. Giovanni towards Croce di Cardosa (1407 m.) the view opens upon the valley of Visso, Monte Fema (1576 m.) and the limestone massif of M. Bove (2169 m.). The area is a habitat of the Apennine wolf. During the 1970’s, when the species risked extinction in Italy, the wolf found refuge in the upper Valnerina, which at that time was the most northern section of its habitat. Passing through the ‘secondary’ pastures of the Croce di Cardosa, one overlooks the bare main ridge of the Sibillini massif and then the route enters the wooded valley of Rapegna. At the base of the valley there are the small hamlets of Rapegna and Nocelleto, while further along near the river Nera, the village of Castelsantangelo sul Nera (730 m.) rises up, dominated by a medieval castle.
