A valley carved by ice

Starting in Fluminata, one of the villages within the local authority of Ussita, the route begins by following the deep, torrent of the river Ussita, which rushes downwards from the Val di Panico, a valley of glacial origin, dominated by the towering rock walls of M. Bove. The town hall in Fluminata has a room dedicated to Cardinal Pietro Gasparri (1871 - 1934) from Ussita, who was Secretary of State of the Vatican City and played an important role in the conciliation of the Italian state. The spring and autumn are seasons that offer the best conditions for this route: in spring the summits are still covered by snow and feed streams descending in steep, temporary channels, occasionally forming thunderous waterfalls. At this time the grasslands around the source of the spring called Panico (1346 m.) are brimming with the splendid colours of crocuses, gagea, alpine squills and orchids. In the autumn there are often beautiful days with brilliant blue skies, crystal clean air, and forests in shades of red and yellow as the leaves of maples and rowans turn. In this area it is possible to see the golden eagle.
