The "Mediterranean" face of the Park

From the hamlet of Villa, near Cessapalombo, you descend into the valley of Fiastrone, passing through lush vegetation, rich in Mediterranean species such as the holm, the fillirea, the terebinth tree, and the smoke tree - a small shrub that turns red in autumn in the clearings of the woods. The route that leads to the Lago del Fiastrone (which was created in the 1950's for hydro-electric power) goes through the deepest and wildest part of the valley where the fierce river has eroded the limestone forming an impressive ravine. The rocky cliffs are home to very interesting birds such as the peregrine falcon and the red winged wall creeper. From the hamlet of Fiegni the view opens onto the lake Fiastrone, and the summits of the Sibillini, while in the northwest the view leads to the fertile hills in the valley of Camerino surrounded by soft mountains. After an ascent one reaches Collemese through the pastures at the base of M. Fiegni where the Romanesque church of S.ta Maria Maddalena is located.
