The hidden forest monasteries

The route starts at the monastery of S. Liberato, built in 1274 by the aristocratic family of Brunforte. Proceeding through mixed forests of hornbeam, manna ash and holm trees the route enters the hamlet of Monastero (723 m.) overlooking the deep and wild valley of Fiastrone. At the foot of Monastero the is the Abbey of St. Saviour, re-founded in the early eleventh century by the famous Benedictine S. Romualdo. The Valle del Fiastrone represented an ideal place for monastic life and has attracted hermits and monks over the millennia. Perched upon a rocky crag on the final stretch of the route are the ruins of the Castle of Col di Pietra, the last fortress of Varano family which belonged to Camerino from the second half of the thirteenth century. The narrow valley then suddenly opens upon Pian di Pieca, a characteristic alluvial plain, while at the hamlet of Rocca Colonnalta the view sweeps over the fertile and harmonious hills of San Ginesio.
