At the foot of the Magic Mountain

This route leads through the foothills of M. Sibilla (2173 m.), which according to legends was inhabited by the Sibyl, who was portrayed as the sorceress Alcina in "Guerrin Meschino", a popular romance written by Andrea da Barberino in 1410. The route begins in the historic centre of Montefortino where the medieval foundation of the village is very evident. At the top of Montefortino are the churches of S. Agostino (sec. XIV), S. Francesco (sec. XIII) and S. Michele Arcangelo (1870). Outside of Montefortino, descending toward the ‘Three Bridges’ or Tre Poni, where the rivers Tenna, Ambro and the stream Cossudro meet, are several ancient watch towers. Although these look similar to ‘casa-torre’ they are not part of the medieval architectural phenomena of ‘house-towers’: the casa-torre evolved from wealthy urban migrants who built this style of home to impose a presence on the landscape while having a high level of security. Further on at the hamlet of Rubbiano the erosive action of the river Tenna running between the cliffs of M. Zampa (1791 m.) and M. Pizzo (1758 m.), has formed the impressive Gola dell'Infernaccio. Before returning to Montefortino the route continues through the hamlets of Colle Regnone and Sossasso, where there is a mosaic landscape of pastures and forests, as well as visible signs of ancient terraces, ascending to a higher altitude where the land was cultivated in the past.
