Valle Dell'Aso
Length: 24600 mt.
Direction of travel: antiorario
Travel time: mezza giornata
difficulty : I - Intermediate
The route starts from the village of Montemonaco, perched at 1000 meters like a balcony overlooking the Sibillini Mountains and hills of Piceno all the way to the Adriatic Sea. As well as exceptional natural and historical features the importance of this area also arises from the many fascinating legends, such as those still surrounding the charm and mystery of Lago di Pilato and M. Sibilla. From the base of M. Sibilla the route descends into the Aso valley and winds upward to the village of Altino, another wonderful vantage point. The route then continues between the hamlets of Vallegrascia, and Rascio located at the base of a long ridge rising up to M. Vettore (2476 m.), the highest mountain in the Sibillini. In the foothills of M. Torrone, yet still at 1159 meters altitude, is the church S.ta Maria in Pantano. This ancient structure dates from the late eighth century and has been restored recently. The original name of the church was "S. Maria delle Sibille” demonstrating the ancient and common custom of uniting pagan and Christian rites.
