The valley that "joins" and "separates"

Due to its dominant position in the Tronto valley, nearby the important Via Salaria, a fortification was erected on the hill of Arquata between the eleventh and thirteenth century. The majestic Castello della Rocca, recently renovated, was home to Giovanna D 'Anjou of Naples. The church of S. Salvatore in the nearby hamlet of Borgo is worth visiting to see its wooden crucifix dating from the thirteenth century. This area, including the valley and the surrounding hills, is home to predominantly beech and chestnut trees while the slopes of M. Vettore are covered in conifers, representing a re-forestation project done decades before the Park was formed, using non indigenous trees. Looking from Forca di Presta toward Arquata del Tronto, the wild Monti della Laga present their beautiful forms, silhouetted against the sky.
