The valley of hidden monasteries

The trail follows the north side of the wide ridge that descends from Pizzo di Chioggia, crossing valleys and streams including Rio Bagno and Rio Fessa. The trail offers sweeping views of the Lago del Fiastrone and along the valley where the abbey of S. Salvatore at Monastero comes into sight

There is a wealth of evidence of the ancient presence of man in this valley, such as the 13th century ruins on Col di Pietra, the 11th century Abbey of the Holy Saviour in Monastero and the Grotta dei Frati (Friars’ Cave), high above the gorges, which was inhabited by the Clareni, dissenting Franciscan monks forced by the population to leave the settlement.

Along the way, the rare holm oak woods of the Sibylline Mountains can be seen. At the edge of the wood there are beautiful views of an imposing red scale cliff.
