The solitary farmhouses between Norcia and Visso

From Campi Vecchio the path goes between Mount Macchialunga and Monticello. At this point a vast panorama of grasslands around Casali dell'Acquaro comes into view, and then the trail descends into the Valle di Visso, following the historic route connecting this town to Norcia.

The prairies of the Acquaro Hills are dotted with hamlets, some of which are still used for livestock farming. In these areas, traditional farming continues, consisting, at this altitude of well over 1000 m, of the cultivation of lentils, wheat and forage.

The mixed woodlands of the Visso valley are home to wolves which live permanently in this part of the Sibyllines; hence the place name “Vallopa”, meaning “valley of the she-wolf”, given to the hamlet of Borgo San Giovanni. To see one is as exciting as it is rare due to the elusive behaviour of this predominantly nocturnal animal.
