“THE DEER” FAUNA CENTER

“The deer” fauna center is a vast fenced-in area with a surface area of 29 Km, on the southern side of Monte Cornaccione between the villages of Castelsantangelo sul Nera and Vallinfante. The area, in turn, is divided into various equipped, fenced-in sectors that form a sort of “Wildpark”, as it is called in similar c entral European areas, where different species such as deer and roes, in a environment of “semi-wilderness”, can maintain their habits and behaviours -inlcuding feeding and reproduction - very close to those in the wild.
Besides providing an authentic experience for visitors and scientists, the preservation of the wild nature of the animals kept in this area represents a requisite necessary for their reintroduction or repopulation in the wild. The fauna center is part of the Deer Eco-Museum, including a visitors center, an exhibition space with informative dioramas.

The Fauna Center has many activities and goals, but in the end they all, whether directly or indirectly, are aimed at guaranteeing the success of the program of deer reintroduction in the National Park of the Monti Sibillini. Some of the principal activities are: the study of animals in a favourable and controlled environment as part of scientific research; didactic activities of environmental education and awareness; visitors’ facilitated observation of the animals with limited interference in the natural environment; care and recovery of wounded or problematic animals; the promotion of sustainable development and tourism in the territory. Not only is the Fauna Center a place for scientific activities, it is also for tourists and nature-lovers, who can learn and observe, with the help of informative panels and observation towers, and accompanied by qualified guides, the many different signs that indicate the age, gender and habits of the animals in the center.
