The plains of Castelluccio are one of the most special and significant environments in the Park. During the Pliocene era this area was the bottom of a large lake. The route, which runs along part of the Trail of Italy (SI), starts from the village of Castelluccio in the direction of Poggio di Croce, where it joins the Sibillini Great Circular Route. It then goes to the Passo del Monte Ventosola before crossing the Piano Grande, an area famous for its spectacular flowers in spring and summer. Thereafter the trail returns to Castelluccio. The surface of this vast plateau, which seems very smooth, is only interrupted by the Fosso dei Mergani, a karst indentation where rainwater flows from of the vast basin. The entire zone is dominated by the unmistakable presence of the austere M. Vettore (2476 m.).
