Where hill and Mountain meet

The trail crosses the foothills of Mount Amandola and passes beside the ancient abbey of Saints Vincenzo and Anastasio now restored and inhabited by Franciscan monks under a vow of silence. Around the base of Mount Priora the trail overlooks the valleys of the Ambro and the Tenna, characterized by deep canyons of limestone carved out by water erosion. The most striking of these is the Gola dell'Infernaccio.

In these transitional areas between the hills and the mountains there are numerous species of mammals such as wolves, wild boar, wildcats, badgers and foxes. Due to their largely nocturnal habits, these are rarely seen but, if you look at the ground, you may see signs of their presence.

The Abbey of Saints Vincenzo and Anastasio, probably built before the year 1000, appears beside the path, almost by magic, to remind walkers of the ancient presence of the monks who built their settlements in these rugged places of rare beauty.
