CASTELSANTANGELO SUL NERA

CASTLE WALLS

Mura castellane In the 1300s two rows of castle walls extended towards the village center from the watchtower, the highest point of the castle, to enlarge triangularly the perimeter of the fortress. Some lengths of the perimeter walls with footpaths and the remains of crenelations are well preserved, as well as the four gates that access the castle: the Gates of Fucine (Porte Fucine) and Saint Martino with stone ashlars, the Gate of S. Angelo featuring a slight ogive arch, and the Nocrina gate.

NOCRINA GATE

Porta Nocrina The principal entrance to the castle, with a double arenaceous and stone arch, featured a defensive tower and drawbridge. Inscribed on the ogive arch is the date 1441, the year of completion or restoration under Berardo da Varano. The old walls on each side of the Gate continue on to the watchtower.

TOWER OF THE NOCRIA CASTLE

An ancient defence and watchtower that is part of the old Nocria Castle, erected in this site in the 13th century; the fortress was the seat of the most renowned feudatory of the high Nera.
