BOLOGNOLA

CASTLE OF THE DA VARANO

Castello dei Da Varano To the west of the central square of Bolognola one can see the large base of the Castle of the Varano, sometimes inaccurately referred to as Pepoli. It was built in 1430 by the Varano family, most likely Berardo, who had claim to this territory after the partition of the Duke’s holdings in that year among the four heirs of Rodolfo III. It may have been erected over an older fortress from the early 1200s; this fort still has a part of the walls and ruins of the towers.
