MONTEGALLO

CASTLE OF SANTA MARIA IN GALLO

According to tradition the castle was built in the 8th century by Marchio Gallo, an emissary of Charlemagne. The former gave his name to the castle and the present day town of Montegallo. In the 14th century, according to the Egidian Constitution, the “castrum” was defined “Mons Sanctae Mariae in Gallo”. The fortress was built near the S. Maria in Lapide church, but in the 16th century was abandoned when the population migrated to a lower area to build the present day village of Balzo, where the ancient stones from the previous settlement were reused. The half-buried perimeter wall of the church and the underground construction with a barrel vaulted ceiling of spongey rock for the deposit of water are the only remains of the castle.
